It was announced last week that Microsoft will retire its Azure IoT Central platform on March 31st, 2027. The Register reports (opens new window) that from April 1st 2024 users will no longer be able to create new application resources. However, all existing IoT Central applications will continue to function until the 2027 sunset.

This move comes in the wake of Google shutting down its Google IoT Core platform in 2023. IBM also chose to shut down its Watson IoT service in November 2022.

Microsoft's Azure IoT suite includes IoT Hub, IoT Edge and IoT Central. IoT Hub provides a cloud-hosted solution to connect and manage IoT devices and sensors. Azure IoT Edge is a device-focused runtime for deploying, running, and monitoring containerized Linux workloads. Azure IoT Central is a cloud-based IoT solution for connecting and managing devices at scale.

Central sits above Hub in the architecture, and there is no indication at this time that Hub will be discontinued.

How to migrate from Azure IoT Central

Companies using Azure IoT Central should consider migrating to a new platform to keep their business running smoothly. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity. There are many platforms to choose from, but choosing the right one is not necessarily straightforward. Costs, additional development requirements, and moving to a new cloud infrastructure will all have an impact on your operations.

Fortunately, Azure customers can seamlessly migrate their deployments to the Davra platform. Davra is already on Azure Marketplace (opens new window), and so is fully compatible with existing deployments. This means that companies embedded in the Azure ecosystem don't need to migrate the rest of their operations.

The Davra Platform (opens new window) is an Industrial IoT platform that enables organisations to develop, deploy and manage their IoT applications. Migrating to Davra will both minimise disruption in the short term, and benefit your operations in the long term.

Features include device management (opens new window), data management (opens new window), application enablement (opens new window), integrations (opens new window), analytics (opens new window), digital twins (opens new window), edge AI, and robust security and compliance controls (opens new window).

We have featured on Gartner's Magic Quadrant for IIoT Platforms for the past five years - one of only four companies to do so. Customers rate Davra 4.6 out of 5 stars on Gartner Peer Insights, and 97% of them would recommend us to a colleague.
